OpenProj - FREE alternative to Microsoft Project
I wanted to share with all of you about Projity's important announcement last week at LinuxWorld.
Projity announced the release of OpenProj, a FREE (yeah, another FREE software) and open source replacement of Microsoft Project. OpenProj is available on Windows, Linux, Unix or Mac and is interoperable with Microsoft Project.
The best thing is, it even opens existing MS Project files! How cool is that? I read on OpenProj website that OpenProj has been downloaded on an average every 35 seconds around the clock at http://www.projity.com since they launched and made the software available last week.
OpenProj is now in the 99.99th percentile for activity on Sourceforge.net and is quickly becoming one of the most used open source solutions worldwide. The OpenProj folks are expecting about 11 million worldwide users and in my opinion, this has been an excellent start for them.
MS Project has been a key strategic solution for Microsoft without alternatives... based on OpenProj website, they said that Microsoft Project resides on about 7% of all office desktops and is part of the MS Office family of solutions which retails at about US$1,000 per license.
However, MS Project is not included in any MS Office suites so it is not pre-installed on any computers. That means, even MS Windows users need to purchase very expensive software for their project needs.
OpenProj is free and cross platform. There is an estimated of 100 million OpenOffice users worldwide and an enormous additional market worldwide for OpenProj. They expect the 7% ratio to actually increase since there are no budgetary constraints.
This puts OpenProj usage in a very large pool of users. The response so far has confirmed their statistics with downloads every 35 seconds around the clock since we launched. The downloads have come from around the world and the Projity team is looking for translations in many languages. If you Google Projity in the News or Blogs you will see tremendous coverage.
Once again, there are people whom cared and is looking to make a difference and challenge the status quo. OpenProj is an important addition to the marketplace. If you want to download OpenProj feel free (download here).
