Download YouTube & Google Videos from your web-browser

I have been receiving several emails the past month on how to save videos from YouTube and Google. So I thought, why not invest 30-mins to do some research on this and share the knowledge. I know some of us have that need to save the videos that you watch on Youtube or Google Video because it is funny, you want to share it with someone else or you want to use it as a reference point in your presentation. Or maybe, you are planning to transcode a video for playback on that new smartphone to impress your wife or new girlfriend. Or maybe you just want to edit that funny video clip into whatever multimedia project that you are working on.

The challenge is, you can only download a subset of videos from Google and as you already know by now (which is why you are reading this blog), YouTube doesn't even provide a download button for you to click and get that video you like so much.

Just for your quick reference, there are several ways to get to that FLV file that the video player application is downloading. If you are using a Mac, chances are you are using the Safari web-browser. Safari users can use the Window->Activities feature to locate and download FLV files as the video is playing. Furthermore, a quick "googling" brings me to a tool developed by Joshua Kinberg whom has put together a couple nice Greasemonkey scripts for Firefox that make downloading pretty simple.

I was looking for an easy solution that works cross-browser, and this is what's working for me: 2 javascript URLs, based on the original code from Joshua's Greasemonkey scripts, that you can add to your bookmarks list.
Remember: Don't click on those two URLs above. Just get them into your browser's bookmarks by right-clicking on them, copy the address and save it to your bookmarks. The next time you are watching a video on Google Video or Youtube, you can click the appropriate bookmark and a window will pop up that will begin downloading the FLV file! Cool huh?

The Youtube file will be named "get_video" after it is downloaded. Make sure you remember where you download it. After that, just rename the video and don't forget to complete the filename with a ".flv" extension so that your operating system can identify which application to open when you double-click the video file.

That's it friends... you now can download videos from Google and YouTube. Happy hacking!

OpenProj - FREE alternative to Microsoft Project I wanted to share with all of you about Projity's important announcement last week at LinuxWorld. Projity announced the release of OpenProj, a FREE (yeah, another FREE software) and open source replacement of Microsoft Project. OpenProj is available on Windows, Linux, Unix or Mac and is interoperable with Microsoft Project. The best thing is, it even opens existing MS Project files! How cool is that? I read on OpenProj website that OpenProj has been downloaded on an average every 35 seconds around the clock at http://www.projity.com since they launched and made the software available last week. OpenProj is now in the 99.99th percentile for activity on Sourceforge.net and is quickly becoming one of the most used open source solutions worldwide. The OpenProj folks are expecting about 11 million worldwide users and in my opinion, this has been an excellent start for them. MS Project has been a key strategic solution for Micro...

The 4 Essentials of Effective Leadership

I read this article written Mark Raciappa, ActionCOACH and I totally agree. His communication is clear, concise and it resonated with me. Mark says; I remember a bumper sticker: “Either Lead or Follow—But Get Out of the Way!” Interestingly, in my company , I say something similar and it goes like this "If you can lead, lead. If you can't lead, follow. If you cannot lead or follow, get out of my way! Mark continued to write that, when our role calls for the former, here are 4 important things to keep in mind: 1. Great leaders communicate. Realizing that good communication is a 2-way street, we must be responsible for our part. That being said, true communication is the response that you get. Whatever form you choose (verbal, mail, e-mail, etc), if you don’t get the outcome you seek (from a “willing” recipient), the responsibility lies with the sender. Great leaders confirm, gain commitment, and solicit feedback to improve the process. 2. Great leaders make decisions...

Making Optimum Choices in Life

I was asked by one of my business mentees I am currently mentoring, "How do I make the most optimum choice in life when I am bombarded with possibilities all the time?" Life is full of choices. This choice, that choice, both choice or none of the above. THAT's a whopping 4 choice!  Choice can open the door to a whole new possibilities, not only at cross-roads on our path in life, but in each moment, giving us access to the bountiful of possibilities with which we can paint our world any way we want it to be.  We can choose a new action, thought or feeling at any time, and create an entirely new reality as a result.  Every choice has an impact or consequence, to a greater or lesser extent, each one like a pebble dropped in a pond; the ripples, the ramifications, spreading out into your future and other areas of your life. Even one small choice made today that shifts your life by a minor degree can take you to an entirely different future than the one you are ...
